The United States is one of the most popular destinations for foreign students. Many of the world’s top tier higher education institutions are located within the United States. American Colleges and Universities are known to be very diverse and accommodating to foreign students. To Study in the United States a foreign student must have a study visa. There are three categories of study visas available to foreign students: F Visa, M Visa and J Visas.
The F-1 Visa is a non-immigrant visa, for the purpose of academic studies and is the most sought-after type of Student Visa amongst foreigners. This visa allows for a foreign student to enter the United States for study purposes. The foreign student must intend on achieving a degree, diploma or a certificate. A foreign student can apply for the F Visa to attend Elementary School, Middle School, High School or Higher Education so forth the educational Institution is approved by the US Government.
To apply for this Visa the applicant must reside outside of the United States and have the have sufficient financial support to complete the duration of their studies. Additionally, the foreign student must be enrolled in a full-time education program, meet the English proficiency requirements set by the educational institution and have a valid passport which is valid for a minimum of 6 months after the completion date of the educational program.
The F-1 Visa allows for a foreign student to work on Campus during their first year of study with restrictions. A foreign student may work on Campus for 20 hours a week during the semester, and more than 20 hours a week during breaks (winter/summer).

The M-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa for students who wish to pursue vocational studies. This visa is optimal for foreign students who wish to learn a specific skilled trade. Vocational study programs help students attain the necessary career skills in a broad range of career paths.
Examples of Vocational programs include Cosmetology, Mechanics, Cooking Classes and Flight training.
In order to qualify for the M-1 Visa, you must be a foreign resident of a country to which you intend to return.
The M-1 Visa does not permit a foreign student to work in the United States, unless it is a part of the vocational training program and is approved in advance by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. (USCIS)
